John Jeremiah Ahearne

John Jeremiah Ahearne - counsellor and psychotherapist, Holborn, WC1

John is a fully-qualified and BACP-registered counsellor and a relational integrative therapist, with emphasis on understanding the internal work in relation to external events and relationships. He is also currently undertaking an MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy at the University of London. For many years John worked in governance at board level in corporate and public sector organisations. He appreciates, and has experience of working with, the pressures that come with busy professional lives and sees many clients with City backgrounds.

My approach

My approach is primarily integrative, meaning that I draw on the training I have had in modalities such as humanistic, relational, psychodynamic, CBT, and other therapeutic relational theories. I do not believe that one modality fits all; the human mind is far too complex for that. However, I do lean towards a more Psychodynamically-informed approach.

At the centre of my approach is the cultivating of a secure, safe, and confidential therapeutic environment and relationship. This is key to building a strong therapeutic alliance with clients and is the bedrock of therapeutic progress.

My qualifications and experience

I hold a Diploma in Integrative Therapeutic Counselling from the City Literary Institute, and a Pg.Cert. in Psychodynamic Practice from University of London. I take a committed approach to Continuous Professional Development (CPD) and have done many courses recently covering subjects such as Gender Identity, Men: Shame and Guilt, and Brief Dynamic Therapy. As part of my ongoing CPD I am also studying a Clinical MSc in Psychodynamic Counselling and Psychotherapy.

My philosophy

I understand that seeking out therapy might be a difficult decision for some, but firmly believe that, when an individual makes that step, it is because they are ready for change and growth. Using my training and knowledge, I will work with you towards a better awareness of yourself and those around you.
